Despite their name, the Crabeater seal does not eat crab but subsist on krill (which you see prominent on the ice in the front of the image), a shrimp-like crustacean that is found around Antarctica. This diet specialization on krill minimizes food competition amongst the other seals found in the area such as Weddell and Leopard. The Crabeater has adapted a sieve-like tooth structure specifically used to filter small crustacean prey. They are the most abundant seal species in the world and inhabit the pack ice zone surrounding Antarctica.
